2012 Caspar Estate Cabernet Franc

The 2012 Season:  An ideal growing season from beginning to end of the season in Napa. No growing season is easy, but 2012 presented few challenges. A mild spring led to a good fruit set. Summer and fall brought warm temperatures, but no heat waves. All the fruit enjoyed a long, slow ripening. Early indications are that Cabernets will be dark, rich and age worthy, inviting comparisons with 2001, 2002 and 2007. The saturation of color is amazing; the wines are almost black, Bordeaux varieties are all heavy with tannins but it is sweet tannins and not drying at all. Also one of the largest harvest on record, really that presented the only problem, where to put all the grape.

2012 Caspar Estate Cabernet Franc Tasting Notes: This is our first release of Caspar Estate Cabernet Franc! The 2012 Cabernet Franc displays an array of dark, red fruits from the vineyard. The wine is a dark and intense red with undertones of purple. Generous notes of dark cherry, raspberry, plum and cassis are followed by a hint of tobacco, while oak brings the aromas together. On the palate, the wine is loaded with cherry and dark, red cassis flavors exemplified by the exceptional 2012 vintage. The wine has balanced acid, structured tannins and a long, persistent finish. We produced 30 cases of this Estate Cabernet Franc and while it is tempting to it drink now this wine will also improve with age for the next five to eight years.
